Wastewater flowing freely into sea off Krabi

Wastewater flowing freely into sea off Krabi

Several luxury hotels are among businesses in Krabi whose wastewater has been found to be flowing directly into the sea.

The province’s vice governor, Pol Captain Apinan Puakpong, went along with a team of military officers and officials from the Krabi Office of Natural Resources and Environment and Public Health Office, to inspect several commercial operations along Tub Kaeg Beach after some people complained that they got itchy after swimming.
Officials had also been told that the water around the foreshore area also smelled bad, affecting the tourism image of the province.
The inspection party found that five 5-star hotels and a restaurant were among businesses whose wastewater flowed down pipes and directly into the sea.
The team collected several samples of the wastewater to be sent for analysis by the Natural Resources and Environment Office Region 15.
They ordered each of the offending venues to remove any wastewater pipes that encroached into beach areas and to treat all their wastewater before releasing it.
“We found that they were all releasing wastewater into the sea, which is possibly why swimmers felt itchy when getting into the sea,” said the vice governor. “The concerned department is checking the pipes that are built on the beach – these must be removed.
“We will also check other beach areas at the main tourism attractions in Krabi, including Phi Phi Island, Ao Nang, Lanta Island and Nong Talay. The business operators that do not follow the orders will be prosecuted.”
