Seabed clean-up yields 500kg of garbage

Seabed clean-up yields 500kg of garbage

Half a tonne of garbage – including fish that died after becoming entangled in discarded nets – was retrieved from the sea near the Krabi tourists attraction of Koh Lanta on Monday.

Krabi provincial administrative organisation president Somsak Kittithornkul led the operation in which 40 volunteer divers, including those from the Miracle of Life Foundation, the Pracha Santisuk Krabi Foundation and volunteers from other provinces, joined forces to clean the seabed and coral reefs around the island. The activity has been held annually for 13 years.

They managed to pull up 500 kilograms of garbage, mostly discarded pieces of fish net that had snagged on coral reefs. Some of them contained fish that had become entangled and died.
They divers also rescued many fish from the nets, including a one-kilogram triggerfish.
