Chiang Mai cleans up to tackle air pollution

Chiang Mai staged a “Big Cleaning” operation on Tuesday to fight overwhelming air pollution.

The operation was held through the collaboration of government agencies, local administrative bodies, educational institutes and residents in the northern city.
Smog has been plaguing Chiang Mai for weeks, with several doctors warning that the air quality had worsened to the point where residents must learn to protect themselves.
More than 300 officials and volunteers joined the Big Cleaning operation on Tuesday. They cleaned roads to reduce the amount of dust, and sprayed water to add moisture to the environment.
Chiang Mai Governor Pawin Chamniprasart said the operation also focused on removing fallen leaves and tree branches to reduce the risk of fires in summer.
