The Ayutthaya provincial administration Thursday has begun taking actions to save 1,329 ageing jujube trees in the old capital of Siam.

Ayutthaya governor Sujin Chaiyachumsak on Thursday held a religious rite in front of the monument of King Uthong to seek permission to trim the trees and improve their condition.
Sujin said there are 779 jujube trees in Ayutthaya’s Muang district and another 550 in the ancient palace of Ayutthaya’s compound. The trees are about 70 to 100 years old. The oldest jujube tree is 135 years old, the governor noted.
He said workers will trim the tree branches, and remove the dead ones, as well as kill termites. They will also use fertiliser in an attempt to keep the trees alive as long as possible.
