Outlets needed for surplus pineapples in Loei

The Loei administration is seeking help from private firms in providing market outlets for owners of pineapple plantations struggling to cope with a surplus of the fruit.

Loei governor Chaiwat Chuenkosum said Thursday that he is seeking cooperation from shopping malls and private firms in the province to provide space at no charge to the farmers to sell their fruit during June and July.

Chaiwat explained that Loei is home to some 17,000 rai of pineapple plantations that produce 600 to 700 tonnes of fruit a day during the harvest season. Factories are only able to buy 200 to 300 tonnnes daily.

He added that the Loei-based 28th Army Circle had agreed to help by buying 8 tonnes of pineapples to feed its personnel while the Loei provincial prison would buy 2 tonnes. However, this still left a massive surplus.
