Following the incident report at 12.20am, police found the dead body of Mangkon Waimongkhun, with knife injuries on the throat and shoulder, on the roadside in Wapi Pathum district while his wife Boonma, who sustained a deep cut in her left hand, was rushed to Maha Sarakham Hospital.
Their son Atthaporn Waimongkhun, 24, was identified as the attacker. Police investigation found that the accused was having a drink with friends in front of their house in Tambon Nong Saeng when Atthaporn assaulted his friend. When Boonma tried to stop him, he attacked her with a knife, injuring her arm. Mongkon then intervened to help his wife but the son chased him and killed him.
Atthaporn, reportedly in a daze and speaking incoherently, was apprehended shortly afterwards and the murder weapon, a blood-stained 82cm-long knife, was seized. He was subjected to an initial drug test at the Wapi Pathum precinct, which was positive. He was sent for another drug test to the district hospital for confirmation.
Police suspect that the suspect had committed the crime under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The man later confessed that he had killed his own father and wounded his mother, police said, adding the case would be concluded and forwarded to a court within a month.
The victim’s cremation ceremony will be held on Wednesday at Wat Suwannapat.
