BMA to step up hygiene checks on drinking water, ice making

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration plans to step up hygiene checks in factories that supply drinking water and ice in the capital during the summer season to avoid contamination by bacteria, a senior official said on Thursday.

Sunthorn Sunthornchart, deputy director of the BMA's Health Department, said the Office of the Food and Drug Administration sought help from the BMA to ensure drinking water and ice manufacturers are complying with Good Manufacturing Practices.
The BMA's Health Department will seek help from 50 Bangkok district offices to check 179 drinking water factories and 71 ice factories from March to July.
Samples of drinking water will be collected for lab tests to check for possible contamination.
He said the officials would also campaign for ice makers to stop using jute bags for ice delivery and use hygienic plastic bags to avoid contamination
