Draft law on tackling forced disappearances, torture gets green light

The Cabinet on Tuesday (June 23) gave the go-ahead to a draft law on the prevention and suppression of torture and forced disappearances, deputy government spokesperson Rachada Thanadirek said.

This bill aims to protect every citizen from being tortured or “disappeared” by state officials as well as provide justice to victims. It also targets human rights violations.
The bill determines the prosecution, penalty for such acts and guidelines for remedy in line with international standards. Every case will be handled by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), but if DSI officials are suspected in the cases, the investigation will be handed over to the police.
The punishment for torture or forced disappearance is a jail term of one to 10 years and a fine of between Bt20,000 and Bt200,000.
