Delhi overtakes Mumbai as worst hit Indian city with 3,788 new Covid-19 cases
With 3,788 fresh cases, Delhi's coronavirus tally has risen to over 70,000 as it became the country's worst-hit city, overtaking Mumbai, the country's financial hub.
The total number of coronavirus cases in Delhi stood at 70,390 in the national capital as of last night, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
Of India's four metropolitan cities, Delhi now has the highest number of cases, while Mumbai stands second with 69,625 cases. Chennai has recorded 45,814 cases so far while Kolkata had 4,896 cases until Tuesday.
With 64 fresh fatalities, the death toll in Delhi also climbed to 2,635. The city has reported the highest number of cases and deaths after Maharashtra, with Mumbai alone having a death toll of 3,962.
The Delhi High Court had earlier this month observed that city is heading towards becoming the coronavirus capital of India.
For the last six days, Delhi has recorded 3,402 cases on an average daily.
Concerned over the rapidly rising Covid-19 cases in Delhi, authorities prepared to conduct a house-to-house screening in a city of over two crore people by July 6 as part of a revised containment strategy.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged the Indian government to scrap the new system requiring assessment of every Covid-19 patient at a government-run facility, an issue on which the Delhi's Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and the Kejriwal government have been at loggerheads.
Kejriwal said if the administration and police forcibly take patients to Covid-19 care centres for their clinical assessment, it will be like holding them in detention for 15 days.
