North, Northeast hit by flash floods, storms and landslides

Eight provinces have been hit by flash floods, while two have been battered by storms and landslides have been reported in Nan province, director general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, Chayapol Thitisak, announced on Wednesday (August 19).

“The monsoon trough across the North and Northeast as well as the low-pressure cell over South China Sea and the southwest monsoon prevailing across the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand since August 6 have brought flash floods to the provinces of Phayao, Nan, Loei, Uttaradit, Kalasin, Prachinburi, Chanthaburi and Trat,” he said. “Meanwhile, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat have been hit by a storm and landslides have been reported in three districts of Nan, namely Song Khwae, Bo Klua and Chaloem Phrakiat.”
The department reported that 858 households in 10 provinces have been affected since August 6 and so far, two storm-related deaths have been reported in Nakhon Si Thammarat.
The director general added that his department has coordinated with local authorities, district administration offices and related agencies to help victims.
“We have installed water pumps to drain floods in several areas, and are handing out survival kits to affected villagers,” he said. “Officials have also been dispatched to estimate the damage to infrastructure and people’s homes.”
