Police get ready for pro-democracy rally today
Police officers are deploying steel barriers around Democracy Monument on Rajdamnoen Avenue on Saturday afternoon in anticipation of a gathering by several groups of pro-democracy protesters.
The Daeng Kao Na 63, Vocational Students Protecting Democracy, Nonthaburi New Generation Network and United Front of Thammasat and the Demonstration groups have scheduled a rally at 2pm on Saturday at the monument to welcome another group led by Jatupat “Pai Dao Din” Boonpattararaksa, who began a march from Nakhon Ratchasima province to Bangkok last week.
After they are joined by Pai’s group, the protesters plan to march to Government House in Dusit district to announce their demands, while some groups have said that they would also spend the night there.
Police have closed off the Phanitchayakan intersection on Rama V Road and the Chamai Maru Chet Bridge on Phitsanulok Road that runs to and from Government House to direct the traffic away from the areas and minimise impact on the public.
