27 deaths, 1,763 new cases as new Covid wave continues to rage


The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on Tuesday reported 1,763 new cases and a record high of 27 deaths.

Of the deaths, eight were in Bangkok, five in Nonthaburi, two each in Samut Prakan and Lamphun, and one each in Chonburi, Ubon Ratchathani, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Buri Ram, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chainat, Nan and Kamphaeng Phet.

The ages of those who succumbed to the virus ranged from 25 to 92, and most reportedly suffered from chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and other complications.

Bangkok again led the list of most cases with 562, followed by 201 in Samut Prakan, 168 in Nonthaburi and 91 in Chonburi.

Meanwhile, 13 returnees tested positive for Covid-19 in state quarantine, eight of whom were Thai nationals and five foreigners.

Of the Thais, four had arrived from Malaysia, two from Egypt and one each from Italy and Sudan. Of the foreigners, two were Pakistani nationals, while one each came from India, Nigeria and Egypt.

Separately, 1,490 patients have recovered and been discharged in the last 24 hours.

As of Tuesday, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand had risen to 72,788. Of these, 69,449 had been contracted locally, including 22,642 who were found via proactive testing, while 3,339 were returnees.

So far, 42,474 have recovered and been discharged, 30,011 patients are still in hospitals, and 303 have died.

According to Worldometer, as of 10am on Tuesday, the number of confirmed cases globally had risen to 154.17 million (up by 669,689), 131.57 million of whom have recovered, 19.38 million are active cases (111,453 in severe condition) and 3.22 million have died (up by 10,478).

Thailand ranks 99th on the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 33.23 million, followed by India 20.27 million, Brazil 14.79 million, France 5.65 million, and Turkey 4.9 million.

Meanwhile, another 6,611 people were given their first Covid-19 shot in the last 24 hours, while 5,099 people were given their second shot, bringing the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in Thailand to 1,498,617.
