Workers’ camp spawns 196 infections in Bangkok

A worker’s camp in Bangkok’s northern district of Laksi has been closed by authorities after 196 residents there tested positive for Covid-19.

The serious outbreak was discovered during proactive testing at the Italian-Thai workers’ camp on Soi Yai Phol, Chalermprakiat Chulabhorn Road.

Initial screening of 209 workers at the camp found 120 were infected with Covid-19. An additional 150 workers were then sent for hospital tests, which revealed another 76 infections.

The camp houses a total of 1,667 workers, all of whom will now be tested.

The infected workers have been sent to hospital, while the camp has been sealed as the workers undergo quarantine inside.

Bangkok accounts for almost half of the 64,891 cases in the third wave of infections that emerged from nightclubs in the capital last month. On Thursday, Thailand recorded 4,887 new Covid-19 cases and 32 deaths.
