Thai firm to build border-trade zone

Myanmar has hired a Thai company to construct the road for a new border trade zone in Thanintharyi town near the Thai border.

The new trade zone in Mau Taung village in southeast Myanmar is scheduled to open this December.
A source involved in the project said SP Tech Mechanic Co will be constructing the 80km long Mau Taung-Thanintharyi road section with a Bt117 million (US$3.7 million) budget .
This project was turned over to the Thai company due to delays by a local company, which was chosen to build the section through a Built-Operate-Transfer scheme two years ago.
Authorities would like the project completed soon, as property prices have increased more than five-fold within three months from more than Bt100,000 to about Bt500,000 for each 2,400 square feet plot. The new trade zone will be a three-hour drive from Bangkok.
