Japanese PM vows to continue aid support

Chairperson of the National League for Democracy and Member of Parliament Aung San Suu Kyi is back in Myanmar after a week-long visit to Japan, which started on April 12.

During her visit, she met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinso Abe on April 18.
The Japanese Prime Minister pledged that Japan will continue to render assistance to Myanmar’s democratic reforms and economic development, according to Japanese media.
The two leaders agreed that education for children plays a vital role in the development of a country’s future, Japanese officials said.
He is the first Japanese Prime Minister to meet with Suu Kyi.
The trip was the second visit to Japan that Suu Kyi has made. The NLD leader studied at Kyoto University from 1985 to 1986.

Myanmar to sell cheaper SIM cards like a lucky draw
Myanmar will put on the market much-awaited 1500K (about US$2) SIM cards through administrator offices in townships across the country so the public can benefit, sources have revealed.
Yangon Region Government has ordered the offices to do this and they will sell their monthly share of cards using a drawing system.
People interested in buying a card will need to show their identity cards and household document before being put on the drawing lists, officials say.
“The township administrator’s office has informed our ward administrator’s office to sell the cards through that system. So we have already notified the people living in our ward to register at the office for the cards. We will sell CDMA-800 SIM cards at the office,” said an official from Sanchaung Township's Northern Ward Administrator Office.
Some wards in Yangon also said that government staff living in the wards will not be included in the scheme.
The Myanmar government has already announced it will grant 350,000 cards a month to regions and states across the country starting from tomorrow. A rough calculation showed that each township will only be able to sell about 25 cards daily according to the supply.
Users will likely to pay 10,000 kyats (about $11) for internet access as an additional charge.
