Traditional garb for Lao officials

The Laotian government is requiring its national formal wear be used instead of normal suits on important domestic and international occasions in order to promote Lao traditions and culture and showcase the characteristics of the nation.

A seminar to define the national formal dress for men and women took place last week in Vientiane and was presided over by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Sounthone Xayachack.
High-ranking leaders’ wives, senior diplomats, former ambassadors, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Institute of Foreign Affairs and concerned ministries and organisations also attended the event.
Speaking at the seminar, Dr Sounthone said this discussion was first had in August last year, so it was time to decide together on national costumes to wear to important events both at home and abroad, to ensure unity and then submit them to the government for approval.
“Laos has its own distinct culture, especially in the traditional dress of Lao people which looks outstanding at international events. When we wear our national dress, wherever we go people will know that we come from Laos,” she said.
Dr Sounthone said social economics have developed more and more, and it can be observed that the dress style of young men and women is changing from the past so we need to have limitations and restrictions.
Nevertheless, the traditional dress of Lao people is outstanding and has impressed others when they have seen it at previous important events.
