“We have prohibited the construction of buildings inside the ancient cultural zones. We have told those responsible to demolish these structures and are doing our utmost not to add more buildings in this area except for temporary, makeshift ones,” deputy-director Aung Aung Kyaw of the ancient Thayay Khitayar-era work group said.
After checking the 2012 survey, the group ordered that those buildings not included in the survey be demolished.
Although there are only small villages in Baikthanoe and Hanlin ancient cities, there are four village tracts in ancient Thayay Khitayar, which is only about six kilometres from Pyay in Bago Region. The Department of Archaeology, Library and National Museums is worried about more people moving into the area.
