Journalist killed for reporting on illegal fishing

PHNOM PENH - A Cambodian journalist was killed in Kampong Chhnang province for his report on illegal fishing. The murder drew concern over the press freedom in Cambodia.

In its statement The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) deplores the death over the weekend of journalist Suon Chan, of the Khmer language newspaper Meakea Kampuchea, in Cholkiri district, Kampong Chhnang province.
“His death is yet another affront to freedom of expression, and in particular to freedom of the press, in the Kingdom of Cambodia (“Cambodia”), where journalists are regularly targeted for their work and where a culture of impunity for these crimes reigns,” the Center said in its statement.
Suon Chan and two other people were beaten by a group of 14 people. The three men were sent to a hospital in Kampong Chhnang. However, because of his serious condition Suon Chan was then brought to a hospital in Phnom Penh but he passed away on the way to Phnom Penh.
Suon Chan’s family member said that the murder may be caused by revenge as Suon Chan recently reported about illegal fishing in the province.
Mom Hun, a district police inspector, said that the local police now have some clues about three suspects.
“Suon Chan’s death indicates not only a rampant disregard for freedom of expression, but also a widespread culture of impunity, where people can resort to committing murder, knowing that they will probably never be brought to justice, said CCHR Human Rights Defenders Project Coordinator Chhay Chhunly.
He added that a transparent investigation into the murder is absolutely necessary. Without one, the situation for journalists will only continue to deteriorate. -
