Senior members of the Arakan League for Democracy and the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party had just finished their dinner on February 5 when they were chased by two unknown armed men on a motorcycle who opened fire at their car.
“We will collaborate with the International Police [Interpol] to search for the attackers and arrest them,” said lieutenant police major Thein Win from Dagon Police Station.
Rakhine Affairs Minister Zaw Aye Maung for Yangon Region opened the case on Friday at the police station, requesting that the attackers be brought to justice.
“We will cooperate with Interpol to find them. We don’t know yet whether they’re from Malaysia or somewhere else as the attack occurred there. We have difficulty in taking immediate action as the attack didn’t happen in Yangon. We will also cooperate with Malaysian police,” Thein Win said.
A special task force had reportedly been established on Wednesday by the Kuala Lumpur Police to investigate the attempted assassination. Sources say that four or five Myanmar nationals involved in the attack were supposed to return to Myanmar just after it and one of them, a holder of a UN refugee card, is still supposed to be in Kuala Lumpur.
