Asean leaders to meet civic reps on major issues in May

Asean leaders are meeting with civic representatives on May 11, to discuss the implementation of requests reached at the Asean People's Forum.

Aung Myo Min, member of Asean People’s Forum Steering Committee, said that on on April 8, Aung Lin, Director General, Department of Asean Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussed with members of Asean People’s Forum Steering Committee. It was agreed that the face-to-face meeting between Asean governments and civic representatives would be organised.
“We have won the permission to hold the meeting of Asean Leaders and civic representatives on May 11. At the event, civic representatives will discuss the implementation of resolutions reached at the Asean’s People’s Forum,” Aung Myo Min continued.
Representatives from each member country will be selected for the meeting.
It is expected that the issues to be pushed forcefully would include the land grabbing in several countries, pollution and the environment as well as the philosophy of responsible investment.
At the latest Asean People’s Forum, held in Yangon during March 21-23, 35 workshops were hosted. Over 3,000 delegates from civil society, peoples’ and grassroots organisations and individuals in Myanmar, the Asean region and beyond, attended the forum hosted under the “Advancing Asean People’s Solidarity towards Sustainable Peace, Development, Justice and Democratisation” theme.
Win Aung from the Shwe natural gas activists group said earlier that the collection of experiences occurring in each country would be submitted to Asean leaders “in order to get some good results for suffering locals.”
