Mandalay police round up suspects in Muslim ward

Crowds gathered in Mandalay's Mawragiwa Ward as police rounded up suspects they say were involved in the riots on July 1 and 2 that left two dead and scores injured.

Police surrounded the predominantly Muslim neighbourhood in Chanayethazan Township at 7.30pm on Saturday to arrest the suspects, drawing crowds but no violence.
“We had information about who was involved in the fighting during the Mandalay riot. So we blocked all the entrances and exits to capture them,” said police officer Zaw Min Oo. He added that the situation was now peaceful.
Family members of those arrested crowded the ward administrator’s office, but witnesses say no shots were fired.
Mandalay police have beefed up security around the neighbourhood.
