First piece of census to be released in August

The first piece of the census will be released in August with the rest scheduled for release in the first four months of next year.

The decision was reached yesterday at a meeting jointly organised by the Ministry of Immigration and Population and the technical advisory group.
The first part will contain only the number of male and female population. Other details including age and religious beliefs will be contained in subsequent reports.
The census, the first in 30 years, has been an international focus, as it would shed light on the current domestic conditions of the country which reunites with the world. The census is however feared to be far from perfect, given violence and conflicts which disrupted the process.
The census will be completed with data from four regions, as data in three regions – three districts in Rakhine State, 97 villages in Kachin State and Kayin State – could not be collected.
According to Myint Kyaing, director-general of the ministry, the ministry is now holding talks on the matters related to the missed-out regions.
Only when all data is properly collected will the country’s exact population be announced.
"It was true some national races were not satisfied with the coding system in the 2014 nationwide census,” Myint Kyaing said.
However, he insisted that the 135 national races indicated in the census was based on a series of talk with local people across the country.
He noted that the focus of the census is not race or citizenship.
“For respondents who said they do not belong to the 135 races, all their words and complaints are recorded,” he said.
