Immigration and Population Minister Khin Yi said recently that under the Asean common visa scheme, Myanmar nationals would not need a visa to enter Asean’s other nine countries, and vice versa. He expected this to happen by 2015.
“We are working with other Asean foreign ministers,” he said.
At present, Myanmar has a pact with Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines and Vietnam for a 14-day free visa for tourists. However, if they want to extend their stay, the visa holders need to return to apply for an entry visa from another country.
To promote tourism, Myanmar introduced an e-visa scheme on September 1. Only tourists can apply for the visa electronically.
A travel agent said that the Asean common visa would definitely help develop the tourism sector. “It’s difficult for Myanmar people to get a visa to Thailand if they have never been to the country, for instance. The common visa will be good for all countries,” he said.
