Student unions have staged four days of protests against the new education law across Myanmar since last Friday (November 21)
On November 22 and 23, students from Myingyan District of Central Myanmar protested against the law and gave public speeches.
On the fourth day of protest in Yangon, the students unions announced that they would give the government 60 days to meet their demands and threatened to escalate the protest if the government fails to respond.
“As we have issued an ultimatum to the government, we are staging small protests in different cities and sharing knowledge about this new law with the students and public,” said Min Thwe Thit from All Burma Federation of Students Unions.
Nan Lin from Dagon University Students Union said that public speeches will be given in Mandalay, Taunggoo, Monywa, Kyaukse, Pyay, Magway, Meiktila, Pyapon, Lashio and Kalay.
He said some student unions plan to go to Dawei to meet with other civic organisations and activists to persuade them to continue the protest if the education law is not amended.
The speaker of Lower House Thura Shwe Mann said that the protesting students might have good intention and good idea for the country. If they submitted their proposal regarding the education law, the parliament will consider thoroughly.
According to Min Thwe Thit, 15 members of the initiate committee are now in other cities, not in Yangon.
“We will gather in Yangon at the end of this month. And then, we will discuss about whether to meet with the Lower House speaker,” she said.
