EU workshop for police, CSOs

The European Union last month hosted a joint workshop for Myanmar Police Force and civil society groups. Twelve officers and 13 civil society actors from Ayeyarwaddy region attended the workshop, for training in in communication, negotiation and liaison s

"This joint workshop is a milestone for reform of the MPF. For the first time ever police officers and civil society actors were sitting together and jointly discussed how to set up a liaison mechanism for regular meetings, consultations and conflict prevention”, explained EU Ambassador Roland Kobia with on the EU training that took place in Pathein.
Special attention was paid to the role of the General Administration Department (GAD) in dealing in land grabbing cases. The relationship with the administration on regional and township level can be quite challenging for MPF Liaison Officers.
“The EU strongly supports the setup of liaison mechanisms between the MPF and civil society organisations which will serve to avoid violent conflicts and support the right of the people to demonstrate peacefully for their interests and needs, ” the ambassador added.
