UEC will issue 2015 election date before August

The general election date will be announced before August next year, said Tin Aye, chairman of the Union Election Commission (UEC) during the meeting with artistes at Micasa Hotel in Yangon on December 16.

He affirmed the plan to hold the general election in the first week of November or by the end of October. The date for holding the election must be issued three months before the election.
“We plan to announce the election date a bit early to give more time to the contesting parties to select its candidates which must be done within one month. After checking the registration of the candidates’ names, we will allow the candidates 60 days to launch their election campaigns,” said Tin Aye.
He continued that the UEC was collecting the voting lists with the help of a computer system through the UEC’s website.
“We are going to hold the 2015 general election that must be free and fair,” Tin Aye added.
The National League for Democracy (NLD) said that it would announce an electoral declaration after the UEC issues the election date.
The NLD’s chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi said earlier that the election in 2015 is more important for the nation than the first election that was held in 2010.
