Zoo to buy Japanese penguins

Myanmar will buy Japanese penguins for more than US$70,000 to be displayed at the Naypyidaw Zoological Gardens, according to the zoo's administrator.

Than Soe Aye said the gardens had to buy new penguins as the former ones died of a fungal disease six months ago and the penguins attracted many visitors.
"We have been unable to display penguins for six months. We already paid half of the price for five pairs of Japanese penguins. The cost is about US$7500 per penguin. They will be here before the end of February," said the administrator.
The penguin house in the gardens has been upgraded to prevent any diseases from reoccurring in the penguins due to temperature and environmental changes.
"We used to change the water once a week at the former pond for the penguins. Now we’ve installed a water purifier to change the water continuously. There are also experts from the Czech Republic providing technical training on how to keep them," he added.
The zoo is also said to be upgrading its medical equipment to treat its animals.
