Taiwanese company eyes Mon State township for modern overhaul

An unnamed Taiwan-based company has begun surveying Chaungsone Township, Mon State, in southern Myanmar with the intention to build a town there, according to Mon State minister Thet Win.

The township will be upgraded with a shopping mall, residential apartments, a motorway, an industrial zone, a hospital and a port.
"Taiwan proposed to renovate Chaungsone Township to make it into a sophisticated city. It's still in the observation stage. Profit sharing has not yet been discussed. We'll present the plan to the government after observation is complete. Land conflicts might occur. We'll have to negotiate with port authorities,'' said Thet Win.
Baluu Island, where the township is located, has an area of 254 square miles and sits 15 feet above sea level.
"We don't know when the project kicks off. It will be good for the townspeople if it is implemented," Thet Win explained.
"The townspeople will appreciate if the project does not harm the environment. We can expect job opportunities through the project," said a resident of the township.
Many youths from Chaungsone Township have migrated to Thailand and Malaysia due to job scarcity.
The name of the Taiwanese company has not been revealed.
