Joint ventures with foreign airlines in sight

Under the draft plan of the Myanmar Aviation Policy, aviation joint ventures between local and foreign airlines would be allowed in line with the Asean Open Sky policy, according to state media.

Gobal New Light of Myanmar quoted Deputy Minister for Transport U Zin Yaw who told the lawmakers (MPs) during a parliamentary session last week that maximum foreign ownership in the joint ventures would be at 49 per cent. The public opinion would be sought first before seeking approval from the Parliament for the draft plan.

Meanwhile, he said that the ministry and Department of Civil Aviation are urging Myanmar’s airlines to merge or seek international airlines as partners to improve their services.

During the session, an MP also mentioned airlines offering high salary and remunerations to win workers from rival airlines. The deputy minister noted that the ministry's responsibility is to supervise safety standards in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation and economic policies, laws and regulations of the government.
