Factories in Thilawa SEZ to commence operations before election

The Thilawa SEZ Management Committee expects factories in the first phase of the special economic zone to start operations before the general election in November.

Than Aung, secretary of the committee, and Joint Secretary Than Than Nwe said the ceremony to mark the commencement of operations is likely to be held in October.  They said that at present, some factories are ready to commence operations, while others are rushing on the construction works. The work has somewhat been delayed due to the monsoon season.
“We’re now waiting for them to finish the construction. Discussions are being held for the opening ceremony. It will be organised before the election,” said Than Than Nwe.
The first phase of the special economic zone houses 39 factories. They belong to local investors as well as foreign investors from countries like Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, the US, France, Sweden, China and Australia. All are involved in the textile, food & beverage, plastic, pharmaceutical and automobile industries.
The first phase covers 211 hectares of the total land space of 296 hectares. Around 35 hectares are reserved for the construction of accommodation, a police station, a fire station, an international-standard school, a hospital, and a shopping mall.
