Census on ethnic, religion groups to be released after election

The lists of ethnic groups and religions compiled in the 2014 nationwide census will be released after the November 8 election.

This announcement came after the discussion between the International Technical Advisory Board (ITAB), the Ministry of Immigration and Population and civil society organisations in Nay Pyi Taw.
Werner Haug from the ITAB said: “We have already got the complete facts and figures. We are waiting for a suitable time. ITAB has understood the fragile situation about religions.”
The ITAB suggested that the list of ethnic groups should be released in alphabetical order without being separated. The new ethnic groups could be released after discussions, according to the ITAB.
Nyi Nyi, director from population department, said: “We had an extensive discussion on the possible impacts of the release of the lists of religions. We agreed to release it quickly. According to the suggestions, there will be least possible impact of the election. So we will declare it at the end of this year.”
