Child snatcher rumours scare Myanmar delta

Yangon - Rumours about a child snatcher gang in Ayeyawady Region on Facebook have caused panic.

Posts, photos and video clips on the social network claimed child snatchers disguised as mentally challenged people stole children for organ trading in the delta region.

The authorities said there was no record of crimes associated with the incidents mentioned in the posts.

“There were no child-smuggling cases in our region. We’ve called a press conference in Pyapon Township to explain it and will do it again in Labutta. They are just rumours,” said Police Captain Aung Naing Moe of Ayeyawady Region.

News about petty criminals had been distorted into tales of child snatchers, police said.

“Once we arrested a drunkard that ran amok. A minute later, the rumours started claiming we had arrested a child snatcher. We have no idea why such rumours are rampant and where they come from. They are spreading in many townships,” said a lance corporal from Myaungmya police.

Parents are afraid to let their children go to school alone.

“I escorted my daughter wherever she goes since I’ve heard the news about child snatchers being arrested in Labutta. I don’t even dare to leave her alone in the house since some news claimed the thieves entered a house and kidnapped children,” said a mother called Thandar.

Pedlars have been accused of being child snatchers.

“Some residents threaten the pedlars since they think they are child stealers. In some cases, they were physically harmed,” said the corporal.

The Eleven Media Group reporters have received anonymous tip-offs but found nothing unusual upon investigation.
