Web users in Taiwan enjoy an average download rate of 34.4 megabytes per second, meaning they could downloaded a 7.5-gigabyte HD movie in just over 29 minutes. That’s behind only Singapore and Sweden, which have speeds of 40.16 and 55.13 Mbps, respectively. Singaporeans could download the 7.5 Gb movie in less than 19 minutes.
Thailand came in 29th on the table, with an average spead of 16.85 Mbps. Hong Kong came in at ninth.
The rankings, based on test data collected by research organisation M-Lab, have given ammunition to users in Western countries who have long complained about telecommunications infrastructure and web speeds.
The United States was 21st, with a download rate of 20 Mbps, while the United Kingdom was 31st and Australia was far down the list at 55th.
Coming in last place – 189th – was Yemen. Downloading the HD movie file at its average speed of 0.34 Mbps would take more than two days.
The top 10 are: Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, Denmark, Netherlands, Latvia, Norway, Belgium, Hong Kong, Switzerland.
