Prayut proposes setting up an Asean response fund for Covid-19
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha proposed on Tuesday (April 14) that Asean countries and the grouping’s partners – China, Japan and South Korea – jointly set up a Covid-19 Asean Response Fund to mitigate the impact of the outbreak, government spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat said.
Prayut made this proposal during a Special Asean Summit and Special Asean+3 Summit on the crisis via video conferencing.
He said the money, drawn from existing Asean funds, will be spent on protective gear, medical supplies and research on medication and vaccines.
The premier added that Asean members should further facilitate transportation and logistics, so goods can be supplied quickly in this time of crisis.
Prayut also said that Asean should learn from this impact so it can be prepared to effectively handle future challenges.
