Publisher Dominic Faulder expected a warm welcome for the book “King Bhumibol: A Life’s Work” thanks to an editorial team chaired by former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun and the promise of fresh revelations about the monarchy.
But Faulder didn’t expect the book to sell out so quickly after its release in November, not even with the gift-giving season about to begin. Orders poured in, though, swamping retailers like Asia Books. Only last month did a fresh stock arrive.
So, yes indeed, a third printing is producing another 25,000 copies to keep up with demand, quite a feat for an English-language book that costs Bt1,200.
Next comes the Thai-language edition. “Despite what people might think, it’s very difficult to produce the Thai version,” Faulder says. “For example, we have to track down every quote by the King with its original wording. That’s an arduous task. And the advisory board is very tough – they will not compromise or allow any mistakes.”
Speaking of arduous tasks, a Chinese edition is also planned, and a few other languages besides. This project is sure to keep the publisher and his team busy for a few more years to come.

Okay, time for us to do the rich a favour. (We like to help them out occasionally.)
Suthitham Chirathiwat, the big boss of the Central Group, has been very busy being father-of-the-groom-to-be with his boy Tham (Boat) soon to marry long-time girlfriend Worachan Chalitarporn.
Suthitham had hoped to make the rounds delivering personal invitations to the grand wedding reception, but the thing is he’s just undergone knee surgery. This is where we come in.
The Chirathiwat family’s beloved friends and business partners (yes, they all read Soopsip) are hereby invited to the wedding party at 6.30pm on March 30 in the Bangkok Convention Hall at the Central Hyatt CentralWorld.
That’s right. Suthitham owns the place, so you’re guaranteed to have everything you could possibly need for the big night. We’re pretty sure we’re not invited.
