The day justice blinked, and what happened

Re: "Before he came along", Letters, February 29.

Vint Chavala's letter followed hard on the news reported the day before (“Charter intrigue deepens”) that elements of the Pheu Thai Party would like to dissolve the independent courts established by the 1997 people’s charter. Indeed, both the Supreme Constitution and Administrative Courts have been a thorn in Thaksin Shiawatra’s side ever since he swept to power 12 years ago, and it’s no wonder the present government would like to dismantle them.
A thorn in Thaksin’s side with but one, very sweet glitch. As Vint Chavala points out, the Supreme Constitution Court blinked dramatically in the hidden assets judgement against him in case No 20/2544 (August 3, 2001), a verdict which the TRCT goes so far as to call “illegal”. More than that, the commission cites that ruling as the “root cause” of all Thailand’s subsequent troubles.
