Tranquil and relaxing, Baan Nai Suan is the best kind of getaway from the city chaos – it has great food. Warisara Bunyatpiyaphoj established her yoga school and cafe in 2010 in a two-storey wooden house embraced by towering, shady trees and plants.
The upper floor has the spacious yoga studio, with room for 10 practitioners to see how far they can bend. Downstairs is for giving the appetite a stretch, a dining area for 80 that’s decorated with old wooden tables and chairs and retro sofas and sprawls into the outdoors.
After class, Warisara descends to the kitchen to create delectable pastries and refreshing beverages. Restaurants are the family business, and she’s been fond of cooking since she childhood. “I loved making desserts when I was little!” she says.
She makes more than 20 different dishes from seasonal fruits, among them apple crumble, crepe cake, caramel custard cake, white chocolate cheesecake, strawberry jellyrolls, passion-fruit pudding and blueberry cheese tart.
Warisara’s bottom line is that everything has to taste good, and to that end she uses only the best cocoa, flour and vanilla from Japan. Her cakes are aromatic and soft and the sauces smack of strawberries and honey.
Along with the sweets, she serves easy-to-eat main dishes too, both Western and local. “I do salads, chicken steak and toasted bread with cheese.”
The top sellers at lunch seem to be the big plate of Penne Carbonara with a boiled egg yolk (Bt140) and toasted bread topped with stir-fried chicken, holy basil and cheese (Bt65).
If your sweet tooth is giving the orders, let it order a Bt90 platter of hot waffles served with sliced bananas and chocolate-chip ice cream in chocolate sauce, or a blueberry cheese tart for Bt95.
Both go well with a cup of aromatic hot mocha macchiato and a glass of lemon mint soda, both Bt75. There’s also green tea latte, fruit-flavoured milk and strawberry-banana milkshakes.
