Web stardom for sneaky Gong

Among the biggest stars born on YouTube lately is Bangkok schoolboy Gong.

It’s pretty sweet the way he lip-synchs to “Sia Jai Tae Mai Care” by Wai Wai from RS Public’s teenybopper record label, Kamikaze. It’s even sweeter the way he keeps turning his head to make sure no one’s sneaking into his bedroom behind him.
What Gong was worried about was that his mum might discover he was using her video camera without permission. Of course that cat’s out of the bag now that the video has gone viral. No problem, though – it was his mother, Prang Pantawee, who first put it online.
“I found it on my camera and posted it on Facebook for Gong’s aunt overseas to see, and then my niece put it on YouTube!” Prang said on Modernine’s “Chaodoowoody” show.
Singer Ben Chalatit and comedian Koh Tee aramboy have swiftly jumped on the bandwagon with videos of them imitating Gong in action, and Wai Wai figured she might as well do one too. None of them has come close to Gong’s three million views.

Wanted lady
The Culture Ministry might have thanked Lady Gaga for promoting Thai ways during her Bangkok concert last month by wearing a classical chada on her head and waving our flag. But no, it’s filed a complaint with the cops.
A ministry spokesman says it’s just passing on a public complaint about a foreign woman in fetish gear riding a motorcycle draped in the Thai flag. Feelings were hurt. Still, says Tankhun Jittitsara of the Democrat Party, can’t the ministry be “more open-minded and feel proud that Lady Gaga used something Thai onstage”?
The ministry complaint explains the colours of the flag but doesn’t mention Gaga going on at length onstage about how much she respects Thais, not least because we’re so tolerant.
Well, we’re not going to put up with farang in fishnets wearing a chada, even if the helmet does sit on the heads of our cabaret drag queens and monkeys in monkey shows.
