The pop band Nuvo return to the stage next month with a show that focuses not on their erstwhile hits but on the songs that didn’t quite make it into the history books.
Titled “B-Side”, the concert will feature cuts from their four albums released between the late ’80s and the early ’90s.
“Songs on the side A always dominate a record label’s marketing strategy, which is why they become popular. But I think those on the B side tend to reflect the real identity of musicians,” singer-guitarist Jirayut “Joe” Wattanasin says of the days when albums were released on vinyl records.
“I’ve wanted to do a concert featuring these songs for quite a while now but it never got off the ground because of concerns that our fans wouldn’t be able to sing along. Kong [guitarist and vocalist Saharat Sangkhapreecha] thought the audience would be bored. I guess he wants to hear the audience screaming. But that’s not for me. In fact, I’ve often played some of the non-promoted songs at concerts because I like their character,” he adds.
Keyboardists Norasak “John” Rattanaveroj and Peter Anthony Hammond, bassist Surachai “Su” Suntaratadakul and Chayut “Mai” Burakammakowit will be on stage with Joe and Kong at the October 13 concert, the band’s first in four years.
“Promoter Wich Suthityawin of I Wave Entertainment, who is also a fan of Nuvo, wants this concert to be different,” says Joe.
Fans can expect to hear tracks from 1988’s “Peng Yang Nee Tang Tae Kerd Loei”, 1990’s “Boon Khun Poo Dam”, 1991’s “Sud Sud Pai Loei” and 1992’s “Oxygen (02)”. Perhaps to give fans the time to learn the lyrics, a partial song list has been posted on the Thai Ticket Major website and includes “Kangkok Rarerng Loei”, “Lop Pai Loei Pai”, “Khad Ma Yang Dee” and “Khrang Nee Khong Thuk Jai”.
Joe isn’t worried about turnout. “This concert will focus on our real fans and I know they can sing all the songs on our albums,” he says.
There will be some A-side numbers too, Joe adds, but these will be sung by guests. Thanakrit “Wan” Panichawit is busy rehearsing “Sud Sud Pai Loei”, “Sanya Pak Plao” and “Niyam Rak”. Sunita “Beau” Leetikul also has a slot and she’ll be performing her own hit “Chan Rou.” There are other special guests too but Joe prefers not to name names, merely saying that they include a well-known entertainer from a comedy show.
“We will have a brass section and a group of chorus singers from A Capella on ‘Kep Wai Hai Ther’,” he says.
