Peace, baby, for heartthrob actors

Peace, baby, for heartthrob actors

What do Nadech Kugimiya and Mario Maurer have in common, apart from being teen heartthrobs and starring in remakes of classic Thai movies - "Khoo Kam" and "Pee Mak Phra Khanong", respectively?

As the Army can tell you, probably with mixed feelings, both young men sought deferrals of their mandatory military conscription last Sunday. Each was granted another year before they have to cut off all that silly hair.
Of course you can’t just walk up to the recruiting sergeant and ask that your term of service be postponed because you’re a big star (though some try). No, both actors need more time for their studies – Nadech at Rangsit University and Mario at Ramkhamhaeng. They’re both obviously enjoying school, because this was Mario’s third military deferral and Nadech’s second. It’s almost as if they don’t want to join the Army.
Nadech had to see the brass in Khon Kaen, his hometown, and Mario did his pleading in Bangkok’s Pravet district. Just in case their star status might have some sway after all, they both wore T-shirts flogging their movies.
Presumably their recruiting officers grumbled, “Okay, another year, but you have to say something nice about the Army.” Mario snapped to attention. “There’s nothing to be afraid of,” he assured other young men via the press.
And Nadech agreed to keep doing his “Auntie Yingluck needs you” promotion for military service in the media. More than one wag on the social media pointed out that it’s the same with any commercial product that Nadech endorses. “He doesn’t necessarily use it!”
