YOU’RE JUST GOING to have to shoulder the residue of your New Year hangover like a man tonight and get to PhatFunk’s opening salvo of 2014. The irresistible lure is Enei, regarded as Russia’s most promising drum-and-bass DJ, and he’s going to shake Glow to pieces.
Bangkok-based French spinner DJ Azek, as Jeremy Guessoum calls himself, has been the mastermind behind the PhatFunk parties since 2010, and he admits that his team members tend to prefer “the darker, more minimal sounds that come out of the Critical Music camp”. That’s a record label.
“When we heard Enei was going to be in the area, we couldn’t think of a better way to kick off 2014. Having been named best newcomer at the Drum & Bass Arena Awards and sitting on a fresh album, this should be a big year for him!”
The authorities in St Petersburg, Russia, know Enei as Alexey Egorchenkov, but he’s been a rising drum-and-bass talent since 2003. He was already a star in his homeland and across Europe in 2010 when he signed with Critical Music and has been touring extensively ever |since.
This is his debut in Thailand, though, and by all accounts it’s not to be missed.
“Tonight you’ll get the usual line-up of PhatFunk residents – DeLorean, Instinct, Orawan and me,” says Azek. “We’ll warm up with some rolling, liquid beats in a build-up to the big sounds of Enei and the return of Yaak Parties own Thar Khone, who’ll close out the night.
“Enei has been recommended by many as a DJ who’ll keep you glued to the dance floor – something not to be missed!”
Azek acknowledges that drum-and-bass is probably destined to remain an alternative genre in music, outside the mainstream, but says the Phatfunk and other drum-and-bass events in Bangkok have seen a steady increase in attendance.
“We’re especially seeing more younger people who come to hear something different and seriously dance. Last year we booked a lot more foreign DJs, like dBridge & SP:MC, Sabre, Makoto, Doc Daneeka and Joe Syntax.
“We’re going to continue on that roll and keep pushing to build a bigger scene and bring people together for the love of the music and have a good time dancing in the process!”
Catch DJ Enei tonight at Glow on Sukhumvit Soi 23, close to the |BTS Asoke and MRT Sukhumvit stations.
Admission with a drink |is Bt400.
