We need policies to distribute opportunity, income to the poor

Re: "Richest 0.1% own half nation's assets", National, September 23.

The figures cited in Tuesday’s report reflect a failure of development in Thailand, where the fruits of high economic growth have been distributed unfairly.
It seems that, in our case, the trickle-down concept – income flowing from the rich to the poor – has not accompanied economic expansion.
So how can we help those who are poor and without assets to build solid foundations that will provide secure financial futures?
The answer is to spread income more evenly through state measures, with priority given to making quality education easily available to the disadvantaged. This will arm them with skills to become entrepreneurs with their own assets and capital, rather than having to submit to the life-long drudgery of labouring in poverty.
Shall we continue to boast about Thailand’s high growth but fail to come clean on the suffering of the poor?
