Slot Machine celebrated 10 years in the music industry last weekend with a well-produced, show at Impact Arena, Muang Thong Thani that had fans hoping it won’t be their last solo effort.
The three-hour concert, which featured Palmy as the only guest, saw the band perform a good sampling of songs from its self-titled debut in 2004 to this year’s “Rainbow” to a backdrop of synchronised scenes shown on several screens around the stage.
The concert opened with an old film about flying saucers invading the world and a countdown before the curtains parted to reveal singer Karinyawat “First” Durongjirakan, drummer Settharat “Auto” Phangchunan, guitarist Janevit “Vit” Chanpanyawong and bassist Atirath “Gak” Pintong looking exceptionally natty in smart white suits.
The rockers opened the show with “Roong” off their latest album “Rainbow” and “Fun, a track from 2008’s” “Grey”. They followed up with ballads “Vaccine” and “Kham Sudthai” but while First was obviously keen for the audience to join in with “Vaccine”, the song was obviously too new. The crowd did however remember the lyrics to “Kham Sudthai”.
First whistled and sang his way through “Phor”, a soundtrack of “Khuen Wan Sao Thueng Chao Wan Chan” (“Sat2Mon”) while a session keyboardist helped out on beat box.
Red light flooded the staged as Slot Machine roared into a raging rock segment that featured “We Are the Rock”, “Werng Wang” and “Tham Jai.”
“We’ve known each other for 10 years,” First told fans, “and I’d like to everybody to sing with us,” as the first notes of “Ror” rang out.
That was followed by “Rudoo” with bassist Gak plucking his strings and First pounding a drum”.
Slot Machine then threw light sticks into the audience for them to wave in “Phra Arthit Song Klod” though with not enough to go around, most of the crowd opted to raise their smartphones instead.
Screams rose to a deafening level as the first acoustic notes were played and Palmy came out to stand with Slot Machine for “Chan Chao” before singing her hit “Khwam Song Jam See Jang”.
“Luem Loke” with its instrument solos and “Fighter” had the fans dancing in the aisles. The band closed out the show with “Paan” and “Klerm” but soon returned with an encore of “Nueay Bang Mai” sung a capella and a reprise of “Roong”.
