New THAI chief better be ace pilot

Re: "Is THAI's turnaround possible?", Streetwise, December 9.

What a short and yet comprehensive and in-depth report on the ills of THAI from Achara Deboonme! She was right on the dot about the poor drive of the organisation and meddling from the boards (now two boards). Missing was the aggressive union of employees. If the late management guru Peter Drucker had seen this, he would have cried with pity.
The case of THAI is a classic example of Jack Welch’s contention that, “If the rate of change on the outside exceeds the rate of change on the inside, the end is near”. So the key question for THAI’s new CEO, Charamporn Jotikasthira, is whether he can create change on the inside to meet what’s occurring outside. Facing decades of entrenched inward attitudes and a “spoilt” environment, Khun Charamporn deserves all the sympathy he can get. As Khun Achara concluded, no one should blame him if he does not succeed.
I hope I will eventually be proven wrong.
