Protecting tourists from the dangers of box jellyfish

Re: "German tourist killed by box jellyfish in Thailand", National, October 7.

A third person in little more than a year has died after being stung by a box jellyfish in Thai waters, this time a tourist on Koh Samui. The seasonal swarming of the creatures will last until December, with coastal waters in the South most affected. So how to respond to the risks posed by box jellyfish, also called sea wasps or sea stingers?
First of all, a publicity campaign could arm tourists with awareness and the proper precautions to take. Meanwhile strict bans should be imposed on swimming at night in areas where swarms have been sighted.
Well-prepared lifeguards and stocks of vinegar can aid victims. Stings should first be rinsed with seawater and then with vinegar for at least 30 seconds to prevent the poison flowing into the bloodstream and attacking the internal organs. First aid is vital.
