Hong Kong was turned over to China in 1997 by Britain under the principle of “one country, two systems”. Effectively, the principle meant that China would not interfere with Hong Kong’s democracy, irrespective of what it did on the mainland. The disappearance of the publishing house staff shows how hollow China’s pledge is and it is evident that the “one country, two systems” idea is in peril.
The world must stop treating China as nothing more than a trade partner while turning a blind eye to its abuses. China must be held accountable for its rights abuses. It would be sad to see a vibrant city like Hong Kong become an appendage of the Communist Party.
