In slamming Sharapova, anti-doping authorities overstepped the mark

TUESDAY, MARCH 15, 2016

Meldonium, the drug that tennis star Maria Sharapova has admitted taking since 2006, was just a few weeks ago added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of proscribed substances. The announcement, however, was made via e-mail

Maybe the US government was unhappy with her refusal to adopt American citizenship despite having lived in Florida since the age of seven. Who knows the motivation behind the accusation?
She has apologised for the oversight and that should suffice to put the case to rest and reassure her jittery sponsors. Here is what her lawyer, John Haggerty, had to say:
“Maria was completely unaware there was any performance-enhancing capabilities to it whatsoever. All the things, the medical conditions, she was being treated for with this drug had nothing to do with enhancing her performance. It had to do with her getting her health to a normal baseline.”
The truth always finds the light of the day.
