Swimmer Benjaporn hands Thailand first Asian Beach Games gold in Danang

Benjaporn Sripanomthorn made Thailand proud on Friday after handing the country its first gold medal on offer in the 2016 Asian Beach Games, which are to kick off officially in Danang, Vietnam on Saturday, September 24.

Benjaporn, who claimed two gold medals in the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar, made a big splash at the Bien Dong Park to cross the finish line first in one hour, 05.57.6 minutes in the women’s 5km marathon swimming, the very first event of the Asian Beach Games in Danang with the first gold up for grabs. Chinese Lei Shan came in second place in 1:05.59.2 hour, with team-mate Another Li Yilin claiming bronze.

Vietnam is hosting the Asian Beach Games (ABG), a multi-sport event to be held every two years among athletes representing countries from Asia, for the first time in history after a great success in hosting the 2003 SEA Games.
