No atheist ever called for death to unbelievers

“More on science, religion ... and ‘enlightened atheists’”, Letters, yesterday.

Putting aside a subtle shift in what he said in his first letter and what he says in his latest, Stan G’s final statement is risible and cannot go unchallenged.
He states, “My other point was that these newly enlightened atheists are often quite aggressive in their desire to make the rest of the world comply with their views.”
He offers not a scintilla of evidence to support this statement.
On the contrary, it is the world’s religions that have been aggressive in their desire to make the rest of the world comply. In the Bible, Matthew 28:19 states: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.”
It is beyond dispute that all the world’s major religions have spread as a result of proselytising. Sometimes, as in the case of Buddhism, this was largely peaceful. But in the case Christianity and Islam, the faith was often spread at the point of a sword, with the unfaithful being bludgeoned into belief in the “one true God”.
