Disappointed with Suu Kyi

It was a hard blow to Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy and for people who genuinely love democracy when a prominent Muslim lawyer and an expert in constitutional law was gunned down brutally at Yangon International Airport recently.

U Ko Ni was a loyal supporter of and legal adviser to the country’s de facto leader, Aung San Su Kyi. So far suspicion falls on the military, since U Ko Ni was a vocal opponent of the military-drafted constitution that unfairly ensures the generals 25 per cent of parliamentary seats and control of the three most important ministries – defence, home affairs and border security.
Now, what has amazed and puzzled most people in Myanmar and the international media is Suu Kyi’s silence over this tragedy. Besides being absent from her former adviser’s funeral, she has not publicly condemned the killing or even offered condolences to the bereaved family.
The Nobel laureate’s silence has disturbed many followers inside and outside Myanmar, just as when she shocked the world by failing to speak up for persecuted minorities.
